Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has received an unusual honour after a newly discovered species of sea slug was named in recognition of his outstanding performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Biologist Jesus Ortea discovered the small red mollusc in the Caribbean and named it Aldisa vozinha to celebrate the veteran shot-stopper’s remarkable contributions during Cape Verde’s historic World Cup campaign.

According to Ortea, the species’ red colour symbolizes Vozinha’s memorable display against European champions Spain, known as “La Roja,” when the goalkeeper inspired Cape Verde to a goalless draw and helped the nation secure its first-ever FIFA World Cup point.

Cape Verde, the second smallest nation to qualify for the World Cup, advanced beyond the group stage before suffering a 3-2 extra-time defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32.

The tournament also transformed Vozinha into a global sensation, with his Instagram following soaring from about 50,000 to more than 17 million.

Ortea has previously honoured football stars by naming species after Costa Rica legend Keylor Navas and former Sporting Gijón striker Quini.
