Dear GhanaWeb,
I have carried a secret for over two decades, and it's slowly destroying me. I've been married to my wife for 21 years.
We have two beautiful daughters, aged 20 and 16. We have a successful business, a comfortable life, and to everyone around us, we are a happy family.
But behind that picture-perfect marriage is a truth that could destroy everything I've built. I have three children outside my marriage. They are 20, 17, and 13 years old, and each has a different mother. My wife has absolutely no idea.
Lately, I haven't been feeling too well. Every day I wake up wondering if something happens to me before I tell the truth. Part of me believes she deserves to know. Another part tells me to take this secret to my grave.
The first child came just before my wedding. I was in a relationship with another woman before meeting my wife, and we were even planning marriage. For reasons I still can't fully explain, I chose my wife instead.
Three days before my wedding, my ex came to see me at work. We talked, emotions took over, and we ended up sleeping together. That single mistake resulted in a pregnancy. Our son is actually three months older than the daughter my wife and I later had.
Because my marriage was still new, I hid everything. I rented an apartment for my ex and the child and quietly supported them while pretending nothing had happened.
My second child came through a woman I dated back at the university. The third is the reason I haven't found the courage to confess. His mother is my wife's close friend. She still visits our house.
She comes around with the boy all the time. Sometimes she even leaves him with us for days whenever she's travelling. My wife adores that child because she has always wished she had a son.
Watching her cuddle him, cook for him, buy him gifts, and treat him like family breaks my heart because she has no idea she's loving her own husband's son. She believes the boy's father lives abroad because that's the story her friend has always told everyone.
To make matters worse, the boy bears my surname because I named him. Everyone thinks it's just a coincidence. Only his mother and I know the truth. Living this double life has become exhausting.
Every month, I send no less than GH¢8,000 to each of the three mothers, aside from paying school fees, rent, medical bills, and countless other expenses. Meanwhile, my wife keeps asking why, despite how successful my business is, we don't seem as wealthy as we should be.
She thinks I'm bad at managing money. Sometimes she suspects I'm hiding something. I've abandoned projects because my money disappears every month. The biggest burden isn't even the money. It's my wife's friend.
Whenever I refuse one of her demands, she threatens to expose everything. I've bought her three cars. Meanwhile, my own wife still drives the same car she's had for years. The apartment I rented for her is even bigger than the house where my own family lives.
I'm ashamed every time I think about it. I'm 48 years old now, and I no longer have peace. I feel trapped by my own mistakes. I know telling my wife the truth could end my marriage forever. But continuing to live this lie feels like a prison sentence.
If you were in my position, would you confess everything and risk losing your family, or would you keep this secret buried and continue living with the guilt? I need your help!
