Dear GhanaWeb,
I never imagined that the biggest battle in my marriage would be one that exists only in my own mind.
I love my wife deeply. She’s kind, supportive, hardworking, and everything I prayed for in a partner. She has never given me a reason to doubt her love or respect for me.
But there’s something I’ve been carrying around that I’m almost too ashamed to admit: my wife earns three times what I make.
The strange thing is, she has never used it against me. She has never compared our salaries, mocked me, or made me feel less of a man.
We share responsibilities, make decisions together, and she contributes to our home without keeping score.
Yet every time I watch her pay for dinner or handle expenses with ease, something inside me breaks a little.
I grew up in a home where my father handled everything financially. In my eyes, that was what being a man meant — paying the bills, providing for the family, and carrying the weight of the household.
That picture became my definition of manhood long before I even understood what marriage really was.
Now, whenever my wife pays for something significant, I smile on the outside, but inside I feel like I’m falling short. She constantly reassures me. She tells me we’re a team. She reminds me that my value isn’t tied to my salary.
She says she married me because of who I am, not because of what I earn. I believe every word she says with my head, but my heart keeps whispering that I’m not doing enough.
Some days, I look at my bank account and feel embarrassed, even though we’ve never struggled financially because of her support. I hate that I feel this way because she has done absolutely nothing wrong. If anything, she’s the kind of partner every man dreams of having.
I know there are many ways to love, protect, support, and lead a family. Still, those childhood beliefs refuse to let go. I’m scared that if I don’t deal with these feelings, they’ll slowly steal the joy from a marriage that is otherwise beautiful.
Has any man ever struggled with feeling “less than” simply because his wife earns more, and how did you overcome it? I need your help!
