The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has congratulated Ing. Rev. Prof. Charles Anum Adams on his election as President-Elect of the West African Federation of Engineering Organisations (WAFEO).

Prof Adams, a distinguished Fellow and former President of GhIE, was elected during the WAFEO-ECOWAS inaugural conference held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on June 15, 2026.

He is expected to assume office in January 2027 for a two-year term ending in January 2029, succeeding Liberia’s Engr. Dadley Decontee Toe.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 6, GhIE described the election as a major milestone for Ghana’s engineering profession and said it reflected the country’s growing influence in engineering practice, research and regional collaboration.

The President of GhIE, Ing. Ludwig Annang Hesse, said Prof. Adams’ election was a recognition of his distinguished career, and commitment to advancing engineering excellence

Prof. Adams is an internationally recognised civil and transportation engineer, academic, consultant and researcher with more than 30 years of experience.

He is the founding director of the African Centre of Excellence Regional Transport Research and Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

He has also held several international positions, including serving on the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO) External Relations Committee, as Vice President (Academic) of the International Road Federation Road Safety Committee, and as founder of the Transport Logistics and Smart Cities Network.

His research focuses on transport infrastructure systems, road asset management, road safety, public transport, infrastructure auditing, electric mobility, net-zero carbon transport and environmental risk management.

He has also led regional initiatives, including the Transport Leadership Advancement Project (TransCAP Africa) and the Centre for Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Leadership (CSSTL).

GhIE said Prof Adams’ election comes at a critical time when Africa is seeking stronger engineering leadership to address infrastructure development, climate resilience, energy transition and regional integration.

The Institution expressed confidence that his leadership would strengthen collaboration among member institutions and contribute to sustainable development across West Africa.

The Institution also pledged its full support to Prof Adams as he prepares to lead WAFEO into what it described as a new era of innovation, partnership and engineering excellence.
