Dear GhanaWeb,
I’m a 41-year-old man, married to a 32-year-old woman. When my wife was six months pregnant, we hired an eighteen-year-old house help because we knew she would need support before and after childbirth.
She moved into our home, and everything seemed fine. Six months after my wife gave birth to our first child, I made the biggest mistake of my life.
Not long after my wife delivered, I started sleeping with our house help. What began as a terrible decision turned into an affair that lasted for months.
Neither of us imagined it would lead to pregnancy until my wife noticed she was looking different and insisted she take a test.
The result came back positive, and she is about six weeks pregnant.
My wife has no idea that I could be responsible. She believes the pregnancy belongs to a boyfriend she assumes our house help has because the girl goes home every weekend.
The truth is that I am about seventy-five percent sure the baby is mine because she came to work for us as a virgin, and I was the first man she ever slept with.
Out of fear, I begged her to tell my wife that she had a boyfriend who got her pregnant. She reluctantly agreed, but everything became worse when my wife called her parents.
They were furious and deeply disappointed in their daughter. Now she is terrified of going home because she has nowhere to turn.
My wife has decided she wants the house help out of our home because she believes a pregnant worker can no longer do her job properly.
She has also demanded to meet this supposed boyfriend, but there is no boyfriend.
The girl recently met a young man who said he liked her, but they were never in a relationship, and she does not even know where he lives.
I feel responsible for putting this young woman in such a painful situation. She is only eighteen and does not deserve to carry this burden alone because of my lack of self-control.
At the same time, my marriage is only a year and a half old; we have a six-month-old baby, and I know confessing the truth could destroy everything we have built.
My wife can be very difficult, and I honestly do not know how to handle what comes next.
I want to protect the young woman from being abandoned by everyone, but I also do not want to lose my wife and my family.
If you were in my shoes, what would you do?
