Dear GhanaWeb,
I never imagined I would face a choice between saving the man I love and protecting my own future.
My boyfriend has been in the hospital for nearly three months after being diagnosed with kidney disease.
He is currently on dialysis, and his family is desperately trying to raise about GH¢100,000 for a kidney transplant.
The painful part is that we already have that money. While planning our future together, we opened a joint account and agreed we wouldn’t marry until we had saved GH¢150,000.
So far, we’ve managed to save almost GH¢115,000, enough to cover the surgery. Everyone expects me to release the money, but I’m scared.
As much as I love him, I can’t stop thinking about the possibility that the transplant might not work. If I give out all the money and he still dies, I’ll be left with almost nothing.
Although I contributed to the savings, he put in most of the money, while I supported him with encouragement and added what I could whenever I had extra.
To make matters worse, he owns a Toyota Camry that could be sold to help pay for the transplant, but his parents want to gift the car to the kidney donor, his aunt’s husband, as a gesture of appreciation.
That decision has left me confused.
Part of me feels that if the worst happens, the money in that account may be the only thing I have left after investing years in this relationship.
We aren’t married, so I don’t know whether his family would even consider me or allow me access to anything if he passes away.
I know this makes me sound selfish, and I honestly feel guilty for even thinking this way. But I’m also afraid of losing both the man I love and the financial security we’ve built together.
If you were in my position, would you use the wedding savings to pay for the transplant or protect your future in case the worst happens? What do I do now?
