New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications Richard Ahiagbah has made a controversial claim that the 34 lives lost in the devastating floods which swept Accra and other parts of the country would have been spared if the NPP had won the 2024 general elections.

According to him, the lives of those people would have been spared had the NPP won the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on UTV on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Ahiagbah argued that the NDC government's handling of the economy and infrastructure had created conditions that worsened the impact of the floods, which killed dozens, destroyed homes and wiped out businesses across the country.

"If the NDC had not won the 2024 elections, the 34 people who had lost their lives would still be alive. If the NPP were in power, that flood would not have killed those people or destroyed the businesses and homes of many others," he said.

The NPP Communications Director also took aim at the NDC's flagship 24-hour economy policy, which he said had still not been implemented, arguing that it would have happened organically under NPP governance.

"The 24-hour economy programme that they are championing and have still not been able to implement would have come about naturally because of how we, the NPP, would have handled the economy," he said.

Ahiagbah explained the economic difficulties that characterised the latter years of the NPP's tenure, attributing them entirely to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic rather than policy failures.

"The economic hardships we faced then were a one-off thing because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the whole world," he said.
