Dear GhanaWeb,
From 2018 to 2022, I was deeply in love with a man I believed I would marry. We planned our future together, bought items for our wedding, and I supported him financially whenever he needed help. I emptied my savings because I thought we were building a life together.
We even traveled to his hometown to meet his family. It was there that his mother casually asked if I knew I was about to become his second wife. I thought she was joking, but she wasn’t.
That was the day I discovered the man I had loved for years already had a wife and two children.
The most painful part was that he never told me. Even after his mother revealed the truth, he was more upset with her for exposing him than remorseful for deceiving me.
It made me wonder how long he intended to keep lying.
He expected me to accept being his second wife. I couldn’t. As much as I loved him, I valued my peace and self-respect more. So I walked away.
I didn’t fight over the money he owed me or demand back the things I had bought for our wedding. I left everything behind and carried only my broken heart.
I thought leaving would mark the beginning of healing.
Instead, it feels like the start of another nightmare. Before we separated, he boldly told me that no other man would ever have me. At the time, I dismissed it as the words of an angry man.
But since 2022, not a single serious relationship has come my way. No one has proposed. No one has shown genuine interest. I’ve even gathered the courage to approach men myself, only to be rejected every time. It has reached a point where I question everything about myself.
I keep asking: what changed? What is so wrong with me?
I’ve prayed, fasted, and sought spiritual help in different places. Still, nothing seems to change. Some days, I lock myself in my room and cry until I have no tears left.
The financial loss hurts, but the emotional betrayal hurts even more. I gave him my trust, my time, my money, and my dreams, while he was secretly building another family’s future with my sacrifices.
Seeing him happily living his life while I struggle to move forward breaks something inside me every day.
I know some people will say I’m overthinking or that I should just move on, but living through this kind of loneliness after such betrayal isn’t easy. Sometimes I wonder if his words are haunting my mind more than anything else.
Has anyone ever walked away from a relationship that completely changed their life? How did you find the strength to believe in love again? What do I do?
FG/EB
