President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence in the future of Ghana’s senior national football team, stating that the Black Stars have the potential to compete for major honours if the current squad is kept together and its development is sustained.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the Ho Sports Stadium, President Mahama praised the Black Stars for exceeding expectations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the Round of 32 despite widespread predictions of a group-stage exit.

“The Black Stars did well. Nobody gave them a chance. People predicted they would crash out at the group stage, but they managed to get into the Round of 32,” he said.

The President urged the Ghana Football Association to maintain the current playing squad and retain the technical team, arguing that continuity is key to future success.

He expressed optimism that with proper planning and consistent development, Ghana could challenge for both the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup in the coming years.

Mahama also stressed the importance of early preparations for future tournaments and sustained investment in sports development. His comments came during a nationwide inspection of sports facilities, including the Ho Sports Stadium, aimed at improving infrastructure and nurturing talent across the country.
