Dear GhanaWeb,
My husband surprised me with a brand-new car. I couldn’t stop smiling. I hugged him, cried happy tears, and kept telling him it was the best gift anyone had ever given me.
To celebrate, we went out for dinner, laughed the whole evening, and made memories I thought we’d cherish forever.
On our way back home, I insisted on driving my new car. My husband hesitated at first, but eventually handed me the keys and sat in the passenger seat.
A few minutes into the journey, I lost control and hit an elderly woman who was crossing the road.
Everything happened so fast. People gathered around us. I was shaking so badly I couldn’t even open the door.
Then my husband did something I’ll never understand. He looked at me and said, “Stay inside the car. Don’t say a word.” He stepped out and told everyone he was the one driving. I wanted to confess immediately, but I was frozen with fear.
The woman was rushed to the hospital, but she didn’t survive. Her children were devastated and demanded justice. The police arrested my husband that same night. Because we had both been drinking before driving and the accident resulted in a death, the case became very serious.
Throughout the investigation and court hearings, he never changed his story. He kept insisting he was the driver. I cried every single day, begging him to tell the truth, but he refused. He said he couldn’t bear to see my life destroyed.
Eventually, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment. The day I heard the judgment, I felt like I was the one who had been sentenced.
Since then, I’ve visited him whenever I could. I take him food, sit with him for hours, and apologize over and over again. Every time I see him behind those prison walls, I feel like I’m staring at the consequences of my own mistake.
But recently, he broke my heart all over again. He held my hands and told me I should move on. He said I’m still young, that he will probably never leave prison, and that I deserve another chance at happiness. Then he asked me to divorce him.
I couldn’t stop crying. How do I leave the man who sacrificed his entire future to save mine? The truth is, I should be the one serving that sentence, not him. I promised him I would wait for him no matter how long it takes, but he keeps pushing me away because he believes that’s what’s best for me.
Now I feel trapped between honoring his wishes and staying loyal to the man who gave up everything for me.
If you were in my shoes, would you grant him the divorce he wants, or would you keep waiting for the husband who sacrificed his freedom to protect you? What do I do now?
