National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has defended the ongoing renovation of the Accra Sports Stadium pitch, insisting the exercise was necessary to restore the playing surface ahead of Ghana’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Senegal.

Responding to criticism over the condition of the pitch, Ampofo Ankrah said many people either do not understand the renovation process or are unaware of the work involved in maintaining a natural grass surface.

“The bottom line is getting results,” he stated, stressing that the pitch had been overrun by several weeds, which threatened the quality of the playing surface.

According to the NSA boss, the renovation has successfully removed the weeds and restored the natural grass, leaving the pitch in excellent condition for competitive football.

The rehabilitation forms part of efforts to ensure the Accra Sports Stadium meets the required standards as Ghana’s Black Maidens prepare to host Senegal in a crucial FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying fixture.
